Organisms in Phylum Bryophyta are thought to be the first plants. They are the mosses, the liverworts, and the hornworts. They are primitive compared to the other plants and lack vascular tissue as well as true roots. They are soft and have tiny anchor like structures called rhizoids that anchor them into place. These plants grow in shaded moist places like rainforests.
